The Game of Venting

Connor Crumpton · 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 · Almost True series

Connor Crumpton argues that the common impulse to “just vent” is an almost-true response to anger, fear, and stress that often leads to gossip and more hurt when done by the world’s unspoken rules. He names those rules (just listen, no filters, no friction), tells a personal marriage story to illustrate the damage, and points listeners to 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: God is the source of all comfort. He teaches a biblical pattern for venting to God (lay it all down, cry out for help, then surrender in praise - lament) and says after receiving God’s comfort we can better comfort others. Finally he gives new rules for Christian community: seek friends who go to God first, couple comfort with wise truth, avoid talking about people who are part of the problem, and keep people’s names safe.

“"If you're a part of the problem, if you're not a part of the problem or the solution, you're not a part of the conversation."” · Connor Crumpton

Take it with you

When overwhelmed, first take the messy feelings to God using lament: lay it out honestly, cry out for help, then conclude in surrender and praise. After you've received God's comfort, bring the issue to trusted friends who also go to God - expect comfort paired with loving truth, not unchecked validation or gossip. Protect others by not discussing people who are part of the problem unless appropriate, and resolve to keep others' names safe.
