Noah Herrin preaches on fasting from Matthew 6 within the Sermon on the Mount, explaining fasting as a spiritual practice meant to remind us that God - not food - is our sustainer. He emphasizes that fasting without prayer is pointless and that Jesus pairs fasting and prayer because prayer turns up the voice of God while fasting turns down the voice of the world. Using Mark 9 (the boy with a demon) he teaches that some spiritual situations require both prayer and fasting to see breakthrough. He warns against public, prideful fasting (the reward of that is only human praise) and invites the congregation to choose a biblical fast and pray especially for the “thing beneath the thing” in their lives and for a new venue for Way Church.
“Don't tell me if you are or you're not okay that's the rule don't tell me - I don't want your reward to be me thinking good thoughts about you; I want your reward to be from the Lord.” · Noah Herrin
Take it with you
Fast with prayer - fasting is intended to deepen your dependence on God, not to earn praise. Do not publicize your fast; keep it private so God, not people, rewards it. Choose a biblical fast (absolute, water-only, or partial), decide a duration, and use the time to pray about the deeper issue beneath the immediate problem and (if you want) join the church in praying/fasting for a new venue.
