How to Hear God's Voice

Noah Herrin teaches from John 10 about how followers of Jesus can learn to recognize God's voice. He argues Jesus the Good Shepherd provides direction, correction, and protection for his sheep, and that hearing God begins by slowing down, being in Scripture, and obeying what God has already said. Herrin uses everyday illustrations - T-ball parenting, a mentor's listening exercise, and the unsettling image of a shepherd 'breaking a sheep's legs' - to show why correction and close proximity to the Shepherd matter. He closes by contrasting the thief (who 'steals, kills, and destroys') with Jesus' promise of a rich and satisfying life and issues an invitation to follow Christ.

“The unsettling corrective image: "The shepherd broke the sheep's legs... for three to four weeks carry the sheep on its back so that the sheep would learn, 'You stay with me.'"” · Noah Herrin

Take it with you

Slow down and practice focused listening (try the 20-minute sound-listening exercise Herrin describes). Make Scripture the primary way you expect God to speak - read it aloud and then obey the next thing it calls you to. Welcome godly correction from trusted mentors and community, recognizing correction often draws you closer to the Shepherd. Follow Jesus’ lead for direction and protection rather than chasing what the world promises.
